SPINE SURGERY & TRAUMA FELLOWSHIP

Vijaya Institute of Trauma & Orthopaedics (VITO) is a super specialty institute which aims to provide world-class treatment for various orthopaedic disorders and sports injuries.

It was established in the year 1999. Since its inception Vijaya Institute of Trauma and Orthopaedics has an impressive track record in providing and managing a wide range of Orthopaedics and Trauma conditions.

The Institute takes care of Trauma patients by providing round-the-clock emergency services. The Orthopaedic services includes: joint replacement surgeries (Knee replacement, Hip replacement), arthroscopy, spinal surgery and Orthopaedic Oncology (Bone Tumours).

CURRICULUM

  • VITO serves as a regional referral area for complex cases, which will broaden the fellow’s experience. In addition to traditional hip and knee replacement surgery, the arthroplasty surgeons perform Osteotomies of the knee, and surface-replacement arthroplasty of the hip. The fellow will participate in a large revision surgery practice and will assist in the operative treatment of patients with infected joint replacement and concomitant severe bone loss. Both modular and non-modular prostheses are used for revision hip surgery.

    Fellows will develop an understanding of ethical, socioeconomic and medical/legal issues that affect patient care. They will also learn how to apply appropriate utilization management and cost containment measures, while providing quality patient care.

    The fellows will participate in various educational activities at VITO. Participation in institutional orientation, education programs and other activities involving medical center faculty is required.

  • Didactic activities of the fellowship will include a weekly Spine surgery teaching conference with a defined syllabus designed to cover the field of Spine surgery.

    Occiput to Sacrum – Microscopic discectomy – ACDF – TLIF – XLIF/DLIF – Transthoracic and retroperitoneal corpectomy and reconstruction – Occiput to pelvis spinal instrumentation – Image guided surgery – Minimally invasive spine surgery – Kyphoplasty – En bloc spondylectomy – Transpedicular osteotomy – Both hook and pedicle screw posterior spinal instrumentation for spinal deformity correction

Educational goals and Characteristics

The fellowship encompasses all aspects of clinical involvement in Orthopaedics surgery which includes exposure to polytrauma management / Spine surgery including assessment of new patients, surgical treatment at assistant level (with level of responsibility dependent on the proficiency demonstrated), post-operative care and rehabilitation.

Fellows will be actively involved in regular clinical and scientific meetings, and will be expected to produce at least one research project suitable for presentation at an international meeting and subsequent publication. The weekly schedule will usually involve daily surgical assistance in the operating theatre and reviewing patients in clinics on rotation and one session in allocated research projects.

Requirements

The applicant must:

be eligible for registration with the Medical Council of India.

have completed their training in Orthopaedic Surgery with atleast 1 years post MS/DNB experience.

have evidence of research experience, including evidence of relevant published research.

The selection process is purely merit based in which all the applicants for the fellowship program will be called for an interview which will be conducted on 1st week of July and 1st week of January for the respective batches. The successful applicants will be informed thereafter through email. It is compulsory for the candidates to bring with them a proposal and protocol for research projects in spine when coming for interview.s
